Safety in Egypt
What most visitors experience, and how to avoid common problems.
Check current advisories
Popular tourist areas are heavily visited and generally safe, but conditions vary by region. Always read your own government’s current travel advisory before you travel.
Common scams
- Unofficial “guides” attaching themselves to you at sites, then demanding tips.
- Taxi drivers without meters — agree a fare first or use a ride-hailing app.
- “Free” gifts pressed into your hand, then charged for.
- Camel/horse rides quoted low, then inflated for the return.
- Shops claiming an attraction is “closed” to divert you to a bazaar.
Tourist police
Egypt has a dedicated tourist police service — dial 126. See the emergency numbers page.
Everyday safety
Traffic is the biggest day-to-day hazard. Use licensed transport, keep valuables secure in crowds, dress modestly to avoid unwanted attention, and keep digital copies of your documents.
