Getting around Egypt

The practical ways to travel between and within cities.

In cities

Ride-hailing apps (Uber, Careem) are widely used in Cairo and Alexandria and remove haggling. The Cairo metro is cheap and has women-only carriages. Agree fares before taking street taxis.

Between cities

Trains link Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor and Aswan; sleeper trains run overnight to Upper Egypt. Domestic flights connect Cairo with Luxor, Aswan and the Red Sea. Long-distance buses serve most routes.

Nile & Red Sea

Nile cruises run between Luxor and Aswan. On the Red Sea, resort transfers and boats are the norm — book excursions through licensed operators.
